It’s a trap every nu-bee singer falls into.
And I’ve been there too.
Do you know this kind of self-talk?
“To be a good singer I have to…
Hit that high note…”
Sing perfectly on-key…”
Be able to sing different styles…”
Make crazy wild colloratura…”
And so on.
This is exactly the mental B.S. that holds you back from discovering…valueing…and trusting your OWN voice.
And it’s totally unnecessary.
Because here’s the truth…
You’re better off singing with your own, unique voice…than trying (and struggling) to meet any standards.
If you don’t believe me…here’s a challenge:
1. Go through your playlist on your smartphone
2. Take a closer look at the singers
3. What are their ranges, their skill-sets?
4. What’s so special about their voices?
5. Take a minute to think about why especially you love all these different kind of songs.
What’s your conclusion?
Here’s what I found out…
You see, I have a wide range of music I like and listened to in the past.
And while growing up with rock bands like Poison, Bon Jovi, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, Linkin Park, Creed…
I also was exposed to music from Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, or Nina Simon.
Heck, I actually listened to a bunch of arias from Luciano Pavarotti, Maria Callas, or Jussi Björling.
Weird I know. But my vocal teacher was a classical singer and he made me listen to this great singers as well.
That’s just the tip of the musical iceberg I consumed over the last 3 decades of my life.
And if I’d take all this information from different kind of singers and put it into a huge computer…then waited for an output…
It would be this…
You can’t compare two voices
Every voice has its flaws. And every voice has its silver lining.
And I’m pretty sure…so does yours.
Think about it.
Where are you naturally good at? Is it your timbre? Or does high notes come easily for you? Do you have striking low notes? Do you make people cry when you sing a sad song?
Dig for that gold in your own voice.
And when you’ve found… sustain it.
Make it your blueprint.
Because..
People love authenticity and…even more… emotions.
So, forget everything else. And just focus on these two things.
Support this with a good, solid vocal technique…
And the rest will take care of itself.
I will take some rest this weekend.
Take care
– Felix “your authenticity coach” Cerny
P.S. If it doesn’t give you the creeps to even think of it…ask other people what they like about your voice.
